Our Commitment to Responsible Exotic Leather Use

Exotic leather is not about excess—it’s about preserving tradition, respecting materials, and ensuring transparency from source to finished product.

We are committed to:

  • Ethical sourcing from regulated and legal suppliers
  • Compliance with CITES and Canadian regulations
  • Responsible, small-batch use—never mass production
  • Full transparency with every custom exotic order

Every exotic piece we produce is intentional, traceable, and documented.

Responsible & Regulated Sourcing

Every exotic hide used by Bucking 90 Leather Co. is sourced through legally authorized, regulated supply chains that operate within international and Canadian wildlife laws.

  • We work exclusively with suppliers who can provide:

    ✅ Verified origin documentation.
    ✅ Species identification.
✅ Legal harvest or farm certification where applicable.
✅ Compliance with international trade standards.

  • We categorically refuse to work with:

❌ Illegally harvested or smuggled hides.
    ❌ Materials without traceable documentation.
❌ Sellers unable to verify species or origin.

Responsible sourcing is not optional—it is foundational. If proper documentation cannot be provided, the material is not considered for use, regardless of demand or aesthetics.

Exotic Leathers We Use

At Bucking 90 Leather Co., exotic leather is selected with intention, restraint, and respect for both the material and the systems that regulate it. Species availability may vary based on legal status, supplier access, and conservation regulations.

When available and legally permitted, we may work with the following exotic leathers:

  • American Alligator

American alligator leather is valued for its durability, strength, and refined scale structure. It is used exclusively for heirloom-level projects where longevity, craftsmanship, and proper documentation are essential. Alligator hides are sourced through regulated trade and accompanied by required compliance records.

  • Caiman

Caiman leather offers a distinct scale pattern and firm structure, making it suitable for structured accessories and statement pieces. As with all exotic materials, caiman is used selectively and only when legal sourcing and documentation standards are met.

  • Elephant

Elephant leather is one of the most tightly regulated exotic materials in the world. When used, it is limited to highly controlled, species-compliant projects and subject to strict legal oversight, documentation, and approval. Availability is extremely limited and not guaranteed.

  • Lizard

Lizard leather is known for its fine scale detail and lightweight profile. It is used for accent applications or specialty projects where precision craftsmanship and careful material handling are required.

  • Nile Crocodile

Nile crocodile leather is prized for its uniform scale pattern and strength. It is sourced from regulated operations operating under international conservation frameworks and is reserved for premium, long-term pieces.

  • Ostrich (Quill)

Ostrich quill leather is recognized for its distinctive raised quill pattern, softness, and durability. It is commonly used for statement pieces where texture and character are central to the design, while still offering excellent long-term wear performance.

  • Ostrich (Smooth

Ostrich no-quill leather is smoother in appearance (also know as Smooth Ostrich), offering the same durability and flexibility as quill leather without the raised follicle pattern. It is well-suited for refined, understated designs where a cleaner finish is preferred.

  • Ostrich Leg

Ostrich leg leather features a naturally scaled texture with a denser, firmer structure than body ostrich. It is used selectively for accent panels and specialty projects that benefit from its unique visual character and abrasion resistance.

  • Pirarucu

Pirarucu leather, also known as arapaima, is sourced from one of the world’s largest freshwater fish and is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable exotic leathers available when properly regulated.

  • Python

Python leather features natural scale variation and flexibility. When used, it is selected for projects that balance visual character with structural integrity and is always sourced through regulated trade channels.

  • Rattlesnake

Rattlesnake leather is used for specialty and accent applications, valued for its unique pattern and texture. Due to its delicate structure, it is handled with reinforcement techniques to ensure longevity and durability.

  • Sting Ray

Stingray leather is one of the most durable exotic leathers available, known for its distinctive bead-like texture and abrasion resistance. It is reserved for applications where extreme durability and long-term wear are required.

Our commitment to CITES includes:

  • Strict adherence to species-specific regulations
  • Respect for Appendix I, II, and III classifications
  • Working only within permitted trade channels
  • Understanding conservation quotas and protections

CITES is often misunderstood as a ban on exotic materials. In reality, it exists to allow controlled, sustainable trade while protecting vulnerable populations. Bucking 90 Leather Co. supports this balance between conservation and craftsmanship.

Canadian Regulations & Export Limitations

As a Canadian business, we operate under some of the strictest wildlife and export regulations in the world.

Important considerations include:

  • Exotic leather products may require permits for export
  • Regulations vary by species, destination country, and product type
  • Improper export can result in seizure, fines, or permanent loss of the item

For this reason:

⚠️ Custom exotic leather products made by Bucking 90 Leather Co. are NOT permitted to leave Canada unless explicitly approved and documented.

Customers are responsible for understanding and respecting these restrictions. We strongly encourage clients to inquire about export eligibility before commissioning an exotic piece.

How This Applies Across Exotic Leathers

To be absolutely clear:

  • American Alligator → Domestic use unless approved

  • Each certificate documents:
