Cuts & Scale Layout

We primarily work with belly cuts, where the scales are flatter, more symmetrical, and visually consistent—perfect for clean, balanced designs.

  • Belly Cut (Smooth Cut)

    The belly cut is taken from the underside of the alligator and is known for its flat, symmetrical scales and refined appearance. This cut is softer and more flexible, making it ideal for precision builds and everyday use. It delivers a clean, timeless look that works well for wallets, belts, watch straps, and dress-forward accessories.

  • Hornback

    The hornback cut comes from the top of the alligator and features raised, pronounced scutes that create a bold, three-dimensional texture. This cut is stiffer and more structured, offering a rugged, aggressive profile with unmatched visual impact. Hornback is best suited for statement pieces, Western-inspired builds, and accent panels where character and presence matter most.

The American Alligator colours we currently have in stock are in-house. These colours are available for custom builds while inventory lasts.

Because American Alligator is a natural material, tone and contrast may vary slightly from hide to hide—even within the same colour family. Scale size, density, and finish all influence the final appearance. Gloss finishes tend to deepen colour and highlight contrast, while matte finishes offer a more natural, understated look.

Special Order Colours

Special order colors may include extended shades of red, blue, green, grey, white, and other statement tones, as well as unique finish variations not regularly kept in stock. Availability depends on current tannery offerings and hide quality at the time of order.

Because these colours are sourced specifically for your project, special order hides typically carry additional cost. Pricing is influenced by colour rarity, dye process, finish, and the size of hide required for your build. Lead times may also be longer than standard in-house options.

All special order colours are confirmed and approved with you before any leather is ordered or cut, ensuring clarity on availability, pricing, and timeline prior to moving forward.

Color Pricing, Hide Size & Hide Grade

The final cost of an American Alligator build is influenced by several factors beyond the color itself. While we keep select colors in-house, pricing can vary depending on color availability, hide size, and hide grade.

Certain colors—especially deeper, more saturated, or less commonly produced tones—may require higher-grade hides and more intensive dye and finishing processes, which can increase cost. Special order colors typically fall into this category.

Hide size also plays a major role in pricing. Larger projects, or builds that require uninterrupted scale layout, demand larger or more select sections of the hide. This can impact cost regardless of the colour chosen.

Hide grade refers to the overall quality and consistency of the leather, including scale uniformity, minimal natural markings, and structural integrity. Higher-grade hides offer a cleaner appearance and greater consistency but come at a premium.

Before any leather is cut or ordered, we confirm colour availability, hide size requirements, hide grade, and any applicable price adjustments, ensuring full transparency and the best possible outcome for your custom piece.

As a Canadian business, Bucking 90 Leather Co. operates under some of the strictest wildlife protection and export regulations in the world. While all exotic leathers we use are legally and ethically sourced, export eligibility is not guaranteed.

Important considerations include:

  • Exotic leather products may require government-issued export permits
  • Regulations vary by species, destination country, and product type
  • Improper export can result in seizure, fines, or permanent loss of the item
