Cuts & Scale Layout

We primarily work with belly cuts, where the scales are flatter, more symmetrical, and visually consistent—perfect for clean, balanced designs.

  • Belly Cut: Ideal for wallets, belts, inlays, and dress-forward pieces
  • Scale Size: Gradually increases toward the center, creating natural visual flow
  • Natural Variation: No two hides are ever identical

Scale layout is carefully considered during the build so focal areas land where they look and wear best.

  • Belly Cut (Smooth Cut)

    The belly cut comes from the underside of the Caiman and features flatter, more uniform scales compared to the back. While still more pronounced than alligator, the belly cut offers a cleaner and more balanced appearance. It works well for wallets, inlays, and belts where structure and consistency matter.

  • Hornback

    The hornback cut is taken from the top of the Caiman and is known for its raised scutes and dramatic, three-dimensional texture. This cut is stiff, bold, and unapologetically aggressive in appearance. Hornback Caiman is best suited for statement belts, Western builds, and accent panels where maximum texture is the goal.

Current In-House Colours

The Caiman leather colours we currently have in stock are kept in-house and are available for custom builds while inventory lasts.

Because Caiman is a natural material with a more pronounced and rigid scale structure, tone and contrast can vary from hide to hide—even within the same colour family. Scale height, density, and natural patterning influence how colour settles across the surface. Gloss finishes tend to emphasize scale edges and deepen contrast, while matte finishes produce a more rugged, natural appearance with visible variation.

Special Order Colors

In addition to our in-house inventory, select Caiman leather colors may be special ordered upon request. These options allow for added customization and are well suited for clients looking to create a bold, distinctive piece or match a specific design vision.

Special order Caiman colors may include extended shades of brown, red, blue, grey, black variations, and other statement tones, as well as select finish variations not regularly kept in stock. Availability depends on current tannery offerings, hide condition, and overall scale quality at the time of order.

Because these hides are sourced specifically for your project, special order Caiman colors typically carry additional cost. Pricing is influenced by color availability, dye process, finish, hide grade, and the size of hide required for your build. Lead times may also be longer compared to standard in-house options.

All special order colors are confirmed and approved with you before any leather is ordered or cut, ensuring full clarity on availability, pricing, and timeline prior to moving forward.

Color Pricing, Hide Size & Hide Grade

Pricing for Caiman leather builds is influenced by colour choice, hide size, and hide grade.

Certain colours—especially deeper tones, specialty finishes, or limited-run dyes—may carry additional cost due to dye complexity and hide availability. Special order colours typically fall into this category.

Hide size also affects pricing. Larger builds or projects requiring continuous scale layout demand larger or more select sections of the hide, which can increase cost regardless of colour.

Hide grade refers to scale consistency, overall hide condition, and structural integrity. Higher-grade Caiman hides offer cleaner scale alignment and fewer natural imperfections, resulting in a more uniform appearance at a higher price point.

As a Canadian business, Bucking 90 Leather Co. operates under some of the strictest wildlife protection and export regulations in the world. While all exotic leathers we use are legally and ethically sourced, export eligibility is not guaranteed.

Important considerations include:

  • Exotic leather products may require government-issued export permits
  • Regulations vary by species, destination country, and product type
  • Improper export can result in seizure, fines, or permanent loss of the item

For this reason:

Most exotic leather items we produce are intended for domestic (Canada-only) use.
