Our Process
Crafted by Hand. Built for a Lifetime.
At Bucking 90 Leather Co., every product is more than just leather and thread—it's a reflection of tradition, craftsmanship, and the western way of life. Long before a belt is worn, a wallet is carried, or a pair of chaps enters the arena, each piece begins at the workbench with a commitment to quality and a respect for the craft.
We don't mass produce. We don't rush. Every item is made by hand, one step at a time, ensuring that the finished product is something you'll be proud to use for years to come. From premium leather selection to the final inspection, every detail is carefully considered and executed with purpose.
Our Process in Creating One-of-A-Kind Leather Goods.

01. The Vision
Every great piece starts with an idea. Whether you're ordering a custom belt, wallet, knife sheath, roughstock chaps, or another leather good, the process begins with understanding exactly what you're looking for. We discuss style preferences, functionality, measurements, leather options, tooling designs, hardware selections, and any personal touches you'd like incorporated into the build. For custom projects, this stage is where your story starts to take shape. No two customers are exactly alike, and we believe the products they carry shouldn't be either. The goal isn't simply to create another leather product—it's to create something uniquely yours.

02. Selecting the Leather
The foundation of every great product is exceptional material.
We carefully source premium hides from trusted suppliers, selecting leather known for its strength, character, and ability to age beautifully over time. Most of our products are crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, a traditional material prized for its durability and rich patina that develops through years of use.
Each hide is individually inspected before it reaches the workbench. Natural grain, texture, and character marks are all considered during this process to ensure every project begins with the best possible material.
For projects featuring exotic leathers, only responsibly sourced materials with proper documentation and certificates of origin are used.
Because quality craftsmanship starts long before the first cut is made.

03. Patterning & Layout
Before the knife touches the leather, every detail is carefully planned.
Patterns are created or selected based on the product being built and the specific requirements of the project. During this stage, special attention is given to grain direction, strength, and overall appearance.
The layout process ensures the strongest portions of the hide are used where durability matters most while showcasing the natural beauty and character of the leather.
This careful planning helps maximize both the lifespan and appearance of the finished product.
-
04. Cutting & Preparation
Precision matters.
Each component is hand-cut from the hide using traditional leatherworking methods. Unlike mass-produced goods stamped out by machines, every piece is individually cut and prepared to ensure consistency and quality.
After cutting, edges are refined, components are shaped, and leather surfaces are prepared for the next stage of the process. Any imperfections are identified and corrected before assembly begins.
This stage requires patience, accuracy, and attention to detail—qualities that define every Bucking 90 product.

05. Tooling & Customization
This is where leather becomes art.
For customers who choose custom tooling, carving, stamping, initials, brands, logos, or personalized artwork, each impression is applied by hand using traditional leatherworking tools.
The leather is carefully prepared before tooling begins, allowing every cut and stamp to create crisp detail and lasting depth. Whether it's a simple set of initials or a fully custom floral pattern, the process takes time, precision, and experience.
No machines. No shortcuts. Just skilled craftsmanship and countless individual impressions made one at a time.
The result is a piece that is truly one of one.

06. Dyeing, Colouring & Finishing
Every finish tells a different story.
Leather is hand-dyed and finished to achieve the desired appearance while enhancing the natural beauty of the hide. Multiple coats may be applied depending on the colour and style of the project, with each layer carefully worked into the leather.
Conditioners and protective finishes help nourish the leather while providing long-term durability against everyday wear.
Because leather is a natural material, no two pieces absorb colour exactly the same way. These subtle variations are part of what make handmade leather goods unique.
Over time, your piece will continue to develop character and patina, becoming even better with age.

07. Stitching & Assembly
Where craftsmanship meets strength.
Once all components are prepared, the product begins to come together. Stitch lines are laid out, holes are punched, hardware is installed, and the assembly process begins.
Every stitch serves a purpose. Whether machine-stitched or hand-finished, durability is always the priority. Premium thread, quality hardware, and proven construction methods ensure each piece is built to withstand years of everyday use.
From belts and wallets to chaps and custom projects, this stage transforms individual components into a finished product.
-
08. Edge Finishing
The details often take the longest.
Edges are sanded, shaped, burnished, and sealed to create a smooth, professional finish. This process not only improves the appearance of the product but also increases durability by protecting exposed leather fibres.
A properly finished edge is one of the hallmarks of quality leatherwork. While many people may never notice it, it's one of the details that separates handcrafted leather goods from mass-produced alternatives.
At Bucking 90, we believe the smallest details often make the biggest difference.
-
09. Final Inspection
Before any product leaves the workshop, it undergoes a thorough quality inspection.
Stitching is checked. Hardware is tested. Tooling is reviewed. Finishes are examined. Measurements are confirmed.
Every product is carefully evaluated to ensure it meets the standards we expect from our own work.
If something isn't right, it doesn't leave the bench.
Simple as that.

10. Ready for the Ride
Once approved, your product is cleaned, packaged, and prepared for its journey home.
By the time your order reaches your hands, it has gone through hours of skilled craftsmanship, countless quality checks, and a process rooted in traditional leatherworking techniques.
What arrives isn't just a product.
It's a piece built to accompany you through everyday life, hard work, rodeo weekends, long miles on the road, and the memories made along the way.
